Halasana (plough pose) and Matsyendrasana (lord of the fishes) can boost our immune system, stimulating the Thymus and Thyroid glands by pressurising and depressurising to increase blood flow and therefore improving the ability of these glands to function optimally.
The Thymus gland supports the immune system by secreting the hormone Thymosin which stimulates the development of disease fighting T-cells. The Thymus is largest during puberty but gradually shrinks to be replaced by fatty tissue, the T-cells continue their job of protecting the body from disease but our immunity does diminish as we age. Working in harmony with this action is the Thyroid gland which regulates insulin release via the Pancreas breaking down sugars to metabolise as energy. This helps to ensure the absorption of nutrients into the body from the food that we eat, very helpful for weight management as well as our overall health and immunity. Foods to eat for good functioning of the Thymus; dark leafy greens, brocoli, tomatoes, berrys.
